Diversions
Diversions require energy and creative thinking, but we have always found they work very well. It works like defusing a bomb before it goes off, which is extra useful when you are out in public!
Let’s say you are out with your child playing on the swings of your local park, and normally when you announce it’s time to go home, a huge tantrum erupts. How about suggesting a hunt for a squirrel, which involves looking into the trees on your route back home, or counting how many yellow cars you see on the way home. One diversion linked to another and another can get you through really quite long walks with your kids.
