Discipline
There is absolutely no point in setting rules and boundaries, if parents do not follow through their threats when the child breaks the rules. We have all heard a warning like 'if you hit little Jimmy again, I will take you straight home', only for another hit to go in and the parent not take the child home.
The message that the child receives is that whatever happens, no consequences ever materialise, so they might as well keep behaving inappropriately. Warnings do not always lead to some sort of punishment, but it does teach the child about ‘cause’ and ‘effect’.
